Game of Thrones fans are convinced they can see somebody lurking behind Sansa Stark in the preview pictures for episode three.

The image, released by HBO on Wednesday, shows Sansa – played by Sophie Turner – in full leathered armour preparing for the Battle of Winterfell.

While fans can’t say for sure who it is, if indeed anybody, some are thinking that it could be Littlefinger, a.k.a Petyr Baelish, who was last seen in season seven.

One shocked fan wrote: “Is it just me or is that Littlefinger creepin’ up on our girl Lady Sansa in the new promo pic for The Battle of Winterfell?! #GameOfThrones.”

Another posted: “WTF? Is this not a face?? And tell me that doesn't look EXACTLY like Littlefinger?? I'm losing my mind, y'all. #GameOfThrones #GameofThronesSeason8 #SansaStark #GOT.”

But others thought it was probably just Arya, played by Maisie Williams, keeping a close eye on her sister as they get ready for the ultimate clash between the living and the dead. Or even Jon Snow (Kit Harington) watching on.

Other pictures released by HBO earlier this week had a lot less for fans to pick apart, but still stoked the excitement for this weekend’s episode – despite the feeling bloodshed is on the horizon.

One photo shows Jon Snow looking horrified, possibly mid-scream, while another shows him with lover (and aunt) Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke.

Another shows Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) in position on the front line, flanked by an army, as the Battle of Winterfell takes hold.

The episode, which marks the midpoint of the final season, took 55 consecutive night shoots to film and will be the longest to date, at 82 minutes.

Game of Thrones is on Sky Atlantic, Mondays at 2am and 9pm and is available to stream on NOW TV and Sky Go.
