Game of Thrones fans hoping to find out the fate of Jon Snow were left disappointed following the first episode of season six.

Fans took to Twitter to express their anger at not being told whether or not the character - played by Kit Harington - is dead or alive.

The Night’s Watchman was killed by his brothers in arms during the season five finale - but speculation grew as to his fate after he was spotted on set during filming for the current series.

But viewers were kept in the dark as the new episode simply showed Snow's body being guarded by Ser Davos, Ghost and some of his remaining followers from Ser Alliser.

Fans hit out at show bosses while others begged for the "agony" over Snow's fate to stop.

One angered fan tweeted: "#GameofThrones had a lot of nerve not resurrecting Jon Snow tonight. Dragging it out is not a teaser, it just p***** people off."

Another posted: “@GameOfThrones that's just not nice. We waited - and waited - now please end our agony and don't drag this out! #jonsnow.”

But others thought they had sussed out his fate and speculated that Melisandre would resurrect Snow.

Titled The Red Woman, Sunday night's episode saw Melisandre strip off before ageing drastically.

Some suggested that her magic could be powerful enough to raise Snow from the grave.

Game of Thrones is on Sky Atlantic tonight at 9pm.
