Eamonn Holmes has claimed that the Duchess of Sussex has an ‘uppity attitude’ amid the debate over her demands for privacy.

Meghan has faced criticism for requesting privacy since joining the royal family, and most recently she was blasted for her decision to guest edit an issue of fashion magazine Vogue.

The TV presenter went head-to-head on This Morning with Canadian journalist Lainey Lui, who supported the Duchess's decision to keep her new baby out of the public eye.

Calling in via video link from Canada, Lui said that it was unfair that the Duchess is getting the brunt of the backlash as Prince Harry may also be behind the couple's preference for privacy.

She was quick to defend the 37-year-old as she spoke of how following a 15-minute conversation over dinner with the Duchess prior to her relationship with Prince Harry, recalling that the Duchess was “really nice”.

“I don’t know why she’s taking the lion share [of criticism], whether or not it’s valid criticism, and why it’s landing on her," she added.

Holmes then referred to an incident at Wimbledon a few weeks ago when the Duchess’s security tried to stop tennis fans from taking photos of her on their phones.

He said: “You do know why it’s landing on her. If you have an uppity attitude, you’re only through the door two minutes and suddenly you’re sitting at Wimbledon and your royal protection are saying ‘no photographs, no photographs!’”

“You do know as a reporter you would be the first if that was somebody in Canada, you would be writing ‘they’re right up their own backside’.”

“I don’t know, I don’t know if I would,” Lui began to say before Holmes interrupted with: “You would!”

“I don’t know if I would want Beyonce to have someone jamming his phone up in her face when she was watching Wimbledon," she responded, before Holmes suggested: “The phone wasn’t in her face.”

Co-host Ruth Langsford also joined in, criticising the Royal couple for not allowing press at the christening and not announcing the names of baby Archie's godparents.

“Everything that was complained about that was held back, was delivered to us,” Lainey hit back in response, alluding to the christening photos released on the Sussexes' Instagram account.

“I think the thing I’m trying to say is, it doesn’t seem to be done in a willing, joyous, inclusive way,” Holmes concluded.

Holmes and Langsford are currently covering for Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield as the hosts take a seven week summer holiday.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
