We may have been waiting two years for drama Doctor Foster to return to screens but the show’s long absence hasn’t dimmed fans’ fury for cheating husband Simon.

Viewers shared their ‘hatred’ of GP Gemma’s ex, played by Bertie Carvel, on social media, describing him as ‘punchable’.

The opening episode of series two saw Simon and his mistress-turned-wife Katie move back to Parminster with their daughter.

For Gemma (Suranne Jones), who chose to stay in the town with her son Tom after discovering her husband’s two-year affair and ruin of their finances, their arrival reopened old wounds.

Meanwhile Simon and Katie threw a party to celebrate their return and wedding, which Gemma decided to crash.

Fans watched on in horror as the GP discovered all her friends, including colleague Ros, were in attendance and ready to raise a toast to her ex’s new life.

It was too much for many Twitter users, who labelled Simon ‘smug’ and ‘punchable’ as he insulted Gemma’s blouse and his new wife asked her to give them her blessing.

But for others, it was Gemma’s friends who were the most at fault for betraying the GP by attending the party despite assuring her they wouldn’t.

The return of the show created a dilemma for viewers, as it clashed with the final 15 minutes of biscuit week on The Great British Bake Off, causing some viewers to switch over so as not to miss the series opener.

Doctor Foster airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One.
