Cristiano Ronaldo's much-hyped interview with Piers Morgan is set to air in the UK this week.

The revealing documentary, called Cristiano Ronaldo Meets Piers Morgan, has already got tongues wagging after a clip of the footballer crying was released as a teaser for the programme.

The Juventus and Portugal star broke down after he was shown a clip of his father Dinis speaking about him, a year before his death in 2004 at the age of 52, after alcohol-induced liver failure.

Ronaldo was just 20 when his father died and he missed many of the biggest moments of his career, including five Champions League titles, the same number of Ballons d'Or and the atar leading his country to Euro 2016 and Nations League glory.

When is the Cristiano Ronaldo interview with Piers Morgan on TV?

The full hour-long interview will air at 9pm on Tuesday, September 17 on ITV.

It will see the self-styled “King of Conversation” talk to the Juventus forward about his extensive successes, as well as the rape allegation that dogged him and his family.

What has come out it so far?

Ahead of the air date, the main talking point has been a clip of Ronaldo bursting into tears after being shown footage of his late father.

The footballer was shown a clip of Jose Dinis Aveiro speaking proudly about his then 20-year-old son on his doorstep, a year before he died.

“I never saw the video,” the Portuguese captain said, his voice cracking with emotion. “I never saw that video. Unbelievable.”

Ronaldo goes on to explain his heartbreak that his father never got to see him become “number one”.

Asked how it felt to hear his father talking of his pride at his achievements, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player said: "I think the interview would be funny, but I didn't expect to cry. But I never saw these images.

"I don't know where you... I have to have these images to show my family.

"But I really don't know my father 100 per cent. He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard."

The 34-year-old father of four said: "My family see [my success], my mum, my brothers, even my old son, but my father, he didn't see nothing, and it was... he died young."

Ronaldo also revealed he plans to marry his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez one day, but not just yet.

He said: "We'll be [married] one day, for sure. It's my mum's dream as well. So, one day. Why not?"

In the interview Morgan also asks the footballer about a rape allegation that was made against him. Ronaldo has vehemently denied the accusation and the claim was later dropped.

In a teaser for the programme, Morgan describes the father-of-four as the “biggest star on the planet.”

Speaking ahead of its release, the TV host said: “Ronaldo is a football genius and a global superstar.

“He’s also a compelling character and this is the most revealing interview he has ever given.

“Prepare to laugh and cry and to be shocked and inspired."
