Claire Foy has said that Olivia Colman will be so good in The Crown that people will forget she was the first to play Queen Elizabeth II.

Foy handed her royal role over to the Broadchurch actress after finishing the second series of the hit Netflix drama.

Foy has revealed Colman is “loving” her new role as the Monarch and joked that her portrayal will be forgotten when the third series kicks off.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, she said: “Olivia is loving it I think, and is having an amazing time.

“I genuinely think that when it starts people will say, 'Who was it that played it before?'"

The actress added: “It's been a year and half ago since we finished. I do miss everybody but it goes on.”

Colman will play Queen Elizabeth in the new episodes of the royal drama alongside Tobias Menzies who has taken over from Matt Smith as Prince Philip.

Cast changes at The Crown have also seen Helena Bonham Carter assume the role of Princess Margaret from Vanessa Kirby.

Emerald Fennell will play a young Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall in the series – set in the 1970s – while Josh O’Connor will star as the Prince of Wales.

Foy’s next starring role is as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a role she admits she nearly turned down because Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara had previously played the role.

Foy, 34, said: “Originally I thought, 'Not on your nelly!'. Two other actresses have played the character to great acclaim and, because it is such a loved set of novels, you are going into it thinking you can only lose.”

Foy was joined on the sofa by comedian David Walliams, funnyman Lee Evans and actor Kurt Russell. There was also music from Mumford & Sons who popped by to perform Guiding Light.

The Graham Norton Show is on BBC One, tonight at 10.35pm
