Chinese has officially been crowned the “King of Takeaways”.

Channel 5 took viewers on a “magical mystery takeaway tour,” from the East End to the North East and beyond to find Britain’s favourite.

Chinese came out on top after securing nearly a quarter of the overall vote, to fight off runner-up, the Indian takeaway and British staple Fish and Chips in third.

Pizza finished in fourth while burgers rounded off the top five.

Everyone’s favourite late night feast, fried chicken and kebabs finished sixth and seventh while the trusty sandwich landed eighth place.

Thai and sausage and chips took ninth and 10th while the bagel narrowly missed out on the Top 10 to finish in 11th.

Other takeaways in the Top 20 included cheesy chips, sushi, Greek, pie, Caribbean, Mexican and the baked potato.

A host of celebrities took part in the countdown which saw Northern dish parmo described as a “carpet of beauty” and Sam and Mark take on the UK’s number one competitive eater in a burrito banishing competition.

A culinary history of the kebab is served up as well as celebs joking they could breathe fire after eating the world’s hottest curry: The Devil’s Dish.

The show comes days after the UK went into meltdown after Channel 5 sparked outrage on naming Pringles, Doritos and Walkers the nation’s favourite crisps.

The result was branded “a national disgrace” and an “utter travesty”.
