With Christmas done and dusted Boxing Day is well and truly upon us. After a day (or month) full of eating, drinking and a bit more eating, a day firmly planted on the sofa is fully needed.

After all there’s nothing quite like a post-Christmas TV binge, surrounded by family and left-over food that you definitely shouldn’t eat but probably will.

Here are our best festive picks to help you manoeuvre through your Boxing Day TV guide.

ABC Murders (BBC One, 9pm)

This adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1936 novel sees Hercule Poirot catapulted back on to screens with John Malkovich leading the cast.

Rupert Grint finds his place on the show as Inspector Crome as he investigates alongside Poirot, delving into the story of the legendary detective on the hunt for a serial killer, known only as A.B.C, who has travelled across Britain via train.

There’s nothing quite like a gripping murder mystery to enjoy this Boxing Day.

The Midnight Gang (BBC One, 7:30pm)

Adorable: The film centres around Walliams' book

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a one-off comedy, and this year’s comes courtesy of David Walliams. The Midnight Gang, the latest of Walliams’ best-selling children’s books to be adapted for TV, tells the tale of a young boy who finds himself in a children’s ward after being hit on the head by a cricket ball.

The incident leads the boy on a trail of discovery where he stumbles across a secret gang of children who go on midnight adventures in the hope of making their dreams come true.

The Big Fat Quiz (Channel 4, 9pm)

Brilliant: Carr returns for his role as host on the show

Is it even Christmas until The Big Fat Quiz makes an appearance?

Stand-up comedian Jimmy Carr returns to screens to host the epic fun-loving show which will see him attempt to keep three celebrity teams in line as they try to answer questions on the past year, from politics and current affairs to popstars and sport.

This year’s teams are expected to include previous panellists Richard Ayoade, Noel Fielding, David Mitchell and presenter Claudia Winkleman. They are expected to be joined by Mo Gilligan and Michelle Wolf, who will appear on the show for the first time.

The BFG (BBC One, 5:40pm)

Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG sees Mark Rylance in the titular role. The story follows orphan Sophie, Ruby Barnhill, who is rescued from her life in the orphanage by a kind-hearted 24- foot giant.

This story of unlikely friendship and looking beyond the exterior is a heart-warming family favourite, making it the perfect watch with children.
