David Attenborough is back and venturing out onto the high (and deep) seas for the BBC. Expect plenty of whale-watching opportunities, creatures full of character and breathtakingly beautiful shots thanks to those cutting-edge cameras.

Here’s everything you need to know about Blue Planet II.

What’s it about?

As ever, the programme looks set to give viewers an unrivalled glimpse at nature beneath the sea, with the trailer featuring spectacular shots of seals, whales, dolphins and more mysterious sea creatures.

It also promises to take nature fans further beneath the ocean’s surface than ever before, showcasing new underwater landscapes and freshly-discovered wildlife.

What new discoveries has the team made?

As well as heading further below the sea’s surface than ever before, the Blue Planet team has also managed to capture some world firsts.

One of these is footage of the giant trevally fish jumping out from beneath the waves, snatching a bird in its jaws and swallowing it whole.

What happens in episode one?

The first programme of the new series focuses on coral reefs, starting with a baby dolphin learning its way around a type of gorgorian that may have medicinal properties.

Meanwhile on another reef, an ingenious tusk fish uses corals as an anvil to help him break open clams.

What sea creatures does it feature?

The series will span creatures large and small from the enormous (humpback wales and giant trevally fish) to the microscopic (phytoplankton). Expect to become acquainted with gender changing fish kobudai and mobula rays who participate in an ocean firework display with the help of tiny bioluminescent sea creatures.

When’s it on?

Blue Planet II airs on Sunday, October 29 at 8pm on BBC Two.
