Last year’s adaptation of And Then There Were None brought three hours of stylish mystery storytelling to the BBC – and now a new Agatha Christie show is in the works.

Filming has begun on The Witness for the Prosecution, based on Christie’s 23-page short story.

The two-part drama will star the likes of Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall, alongside Toby Jones and Andrea Riseborough.

A synopsis for the series reads: “1920s London. A murder, brutal and bloodthirsty, has stained the plush carpets of a handsome London townhouse.

“The victim is the glamorous and rich Emily French (Kim Cattrall). All the evidence points to Leonard Vole (Billy Howle), a young chancer to whom the heiress left her vast fortune and who ruthlessly took her life.

“At least, this is the story that Emily’s dedicated housekeeper Janet Mackenzie (Monica Dolan) stands by in court. Leonard however, is adamant that his partner, the enigmatic chorus girl Romaine (Andrea Riseborough), can prove his innocence. Tasked with representing Leonard is his solicitor John Mayhew (Toby Jones) and King’s Counsel, Sir Charles Carter KC (David Haig).”

The story has been adapted by Sarah Phelps, who also wrote the screenplay for And Then There Were None, and the BBC’s adaptation of JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy.

“The Witness for the Prosecution is a compelling story of deceit, desire, murder, money and morality, innocence and guilt, heartbreak and - most painful and dangerous of all – love,” Phelps says.

“At the centre of this dark and tangled net is the astonishing character of Romaine, a noir heroine for all our times.”
