BAFTA winners 2019: The full list as Jodie Comer is crowned Best Actress at TV Awards and Killing Eve scoops THREE gongs

Assassin drama Killing Eve dominated this year’s BAFTA TV Awards, picking up the coveted Best Drama Series gong.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s gripping series won three out of a possible six gongs, with Jodie Comer, who played Villanelle, crowned Best Actress.

A tearful Comer fought off competition from Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard), Ruth Wilson (Mrs Wilson) and her co-star Sandra Oh.

On collecting the gong she said: “Wow thank you so much BAFTA. I’m the only one who has turned on the water works. I want to thank Stephen Graham. If I didn’t owe you a pint before, I do now.”

She continued: “I would love to dedicate this award to my nana Francis who sadly passed away the first week of filming so you never got to see Villanelle. She was the life and soul of everything.”

Her co-star Fiona Shaw, who plays Carolyn Martens, also picked up her first BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. Ben Whishaw won the male equivalent for his role in A Very English Scandal.

Benedict Cumberbatch was crowned Best Actor for his role as Patrick Melrose in the BBC series of the same name, which also scooped the award for Mini Series.

“I’m very used to being a bridesmaid – not the bride,” Cumberbatch said. “I breathe rarefied air because it’s a gift what we get to do as actors.

“I’d like to thank my wife Sophie and our family you’re my rock.”

The BAFTA for Entertainment Programme was awarded to Britain’s Got Talent for the second year running, while I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! received the Reality & Constructed Factual gong.

Ant McPartlin joined Declan Donnelly on stage to accept the awards, a move which angered some viewers who argued he should not have celebrated with the cast and crews of both shows following his one year hiatus from TV.

EastEnders was awarded the BAFTA for Soap & Continuing Drama while Bodyguard won the Virgin Must See Moments gong for the shock death of Julia Montague, played by Keeley Hawes.

Male Performance in a Comedy Programme went to Steve Pemberton for Inside No. 9 while Jessica Hynes took home the female equivalent for There She Goes. The BAFTA for Scripted Comedy was won by Sally4Ever.

Piers Morgan joked he was not happy with being snubbed twice in one night after Good Morning Britain lost out to Channel 4 in the News Coverage category.

The broadcaster tweeted a gif of Jack Nicholson’s character in The Shining throwing pots and pans on the floor alongside the caption: “We lost. In fact, we lost twice in the same category. But I’m taking it really well.”

Graham Norton returned to host the proceedings, and took a swipe at Danny Baker’s recent firing from BBC Radio 5 Live.
