With Halloween just over a week away, it’s time for the return of everyone’s favourite OTT camp gore-fest American Horror Story.

The anthology series switches up the setting every time, and after a traditional haunted house, a mental asylum, a witches’ coven, and a ‘freak show’, it’s time for the world’s spookiest hotel to open its doors to unsuspecting victims.

Here’s what to expect as the show returns, bigger and gaudier than ever.

1) The gist

As the title makes clear, Season 5 is set in a hotel – Hotel Cortez in LA, to be exact. Except, this isn’t your typical Hilton, and it’s scarier than a night in a dodgy hostel.

Expect child ghosts everywhere, people sewed into mattresses, and The Addiction Demon, whose practices are too disturbing to even mention here.

As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a serial killer on the loose – The Ten Commandments Killer. No prizes for guessing his modus operandi.

2) The Countess

The biggest talking point in the production of the new series has been Lady Gaga’s addition to the ever-expanding cast of the show. She plays The Countess, the vampiric owner of the hotel who indulges in OTT sexual practices and has an unhealthy relationship with her lover Donavon, who she ‘sired’ (or ‘turned into a vampire’ to the non-converted). This time around the lavish sets look like they wouldn’t be out of place in a shiny Gaga video.

3) The receptionist

The legendary Misery actress Kathy Bates is back for another round of scares, though she’s in a much smaller role compared to her star turn in Coven. This time around she’s Iris, the hotel receptionist, who gives guests ominous warnings as they check in to the hotel. Who bets they don’t listen to a word she says?

To learn all the secrets of the Hotel Cortez, tune in to the goriest, sexiest, and scariest series of American Horror Story yet.
