Series two of 13 Reasons Why is set to drop on Netflix.

The highly-anticipated show was at the forefront of controversy after the last series aired over the way it handled sensitive topics.

But executive producer and singer Selena Gomez defended the show, hailing the nature of the story "beautifully tragic".

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming series:

What happened in series one?

The series centred around Hannah Baker, a character pulled from the best-selling 2017 book by Jay Asher, who acts as a the narrator throughout.

The story followed Baker’s suicide which saw her leave 13 tapes addressed to 13 people mapping out the events which led to her decision, including bullying and rape.

Audiences saw Baker’s friend Clay Jensen unravel as they simultaneously experience the tale of the tapes as he does.

What was the controversy surrounding 13 Reasons Why?

The American drama came under fire for its “glamorous” portrayal of suicide and graphic scenes.

The uproar was also sparked from themes including drink-driving, death and rape.

Netflix was forced to step in and add a content warning to the beginning of the shows over “distressing” images.

It later strengthened the warning to include links to various support organisations.

Gomez defended the show following the backlash, telling Associated Press: "We stayed very true to the book...what Jay Asher created was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story and I think that’s what we wanted to do.

"We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] gonna come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing. I'm overwhelmed, I'm very proud of it."

Who’s in the cast?

Australian actress Katherine Langford will return to reprise her role as Hannah Baker in the hit series.

Starring opposite the actress is Don’t Breathe actor Dylan Minnette who plays Clay Jensen.

The show also stars American actor Christian Navarro as Tony Padilla, who was the first to be given the tapes in series one.

What is the new series about?
