The power of love

The personal has long been the political for Tim Miller, who for two decades has performed shows about his experience as a gay American. His latest show offers an intimate reminder that equal rights is an ambition, not a reality; specifically, that the United States offers 1,049 rights to married couples that it doesn't to gay ones.

Which means Miller has to take extreme measures in order to stay with his Australian partner, Alistair. They can't get married, so Alistair can't live in the US, so Miller has to move to somewhere - such as Britain - that recognises gay relationships.

Deep terrain, both emotionally and politically, that this sporadically brilliant show could explore more fully. Wary of delivering a po-faced Glory Box monologue about 'the homophobic human rights violations of the United States' (he means it, but knows such phrases can sound off-puttingly hysterical), he peppers his act with jokes, gratuitous nudity and a hyper performance style that is an acquired taste.

The thing is, Miller doesn't need to shout so. The more heartfelt sections of the show prove he has plenty enough charisma to hold the attention without affectation. I'd have liked to hear more boring bits - details of US law, the nitty gritty of Alistair's legal status - and fewer jokes, less 'performance art'. But Miller's sincerity finally wins out to create an affecting ending that reminds us of the power of love - and of legislation.
