Sophie's choice of opera fans

One of the most expensive productions to be staged at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden has opened to a full house. Hailed as the "most significant British opera of the last 50 years", performances of Sophie's Choice are rumoured to cost more than £100,000 each. The premiere was watched by Madonna and Chelsea Clinton. It is understood Meryl Streep, star of the 1982 Oscar-winning film of the same name, flew from the US to see the opening.
