Cackling like a pro: Jerry Hall as the Wicked Queen
William Moore15 December 2014

Jerry Hall hams it up as the Wicked Queen in her glittery and cartoonish pantomime debut. The Texan supermodel turned actress pouts, cackles and arches her eyebrows like a pro (she lip-synchs her songs, but hey-ho).

Eric Potts’s script is packed with nods to her life, from her marriage with Mick Jagger (“get off my cloud!” she shrieks) to her time on Strictly Come Dancing. She’s at her best when standing over her cauldron, prepping the poisoned apple to give to poor Snow White (Aimie Atkinson), as her minions dance to Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams.

Chris Jarvis and Nicholas Colicos provide rowdy comedy as a court jester and spineless henchman, while the production’s warm heart comes from the gang of dwarfs led by Phil Holden with a scene-stealing performance from his real-life son, Paddy.

Carole Todd’s production zips along with energetic covers of One Direction and, inevitably, Pharrell’s Happy along with songs from the 1937 Disney classic.

A few below-the-belt digs at Lidl, Wetherspoons and Slough fall flat (the show misjudges the snobbery of a Richmond audience). Not the fairest panto of them all, then, but a night of feelgood fun nevertheless.
