Royal New Zealand Ballet

10 April 2012

Much as we pretend otherwise, few of us can resist a romantic weepie, especially one that includes youth and beauty and a first, doomed love. Romeo And Juliet ticks all the right boxes and, in the ballet version, it has some highly evocative music as well.

It's so popular, in fact, that there are three danced versions in London this summer. The Royal has just finished its run of Kenneth MacMillan's production. In July, the Bolshoi brings its new version to the Opera House. And this week, New Zealand's national ballet troupe is performing its modernday production at Sadler's Wells.

As well as Christopher Hampson's take on Shakespeare's love birds, there's a very promising triple bill, which includes Frenzy. All of it is new to the UK, although the choreographers (Mark Baldwin, Javier De Frutos and Hampson, again) are well known in London.

Triple Bill, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 April, Romeo and Juliet Thursday 29-Saturday 1 May
