Royal farce targets Camilla

A new comic play about the Royal Family features the Duchess of Cornwall having an affair with the Duke of Edinburgh and portrays Prince Harry as a Machiavellian genius out to steal the throne.

A Right Royal Farce is from the writers of last year's hit Who's The Daddy?, which sent up the sex lives of former Home Secretary David Blunkett and Kimberly Quinn. Set in an imaginary future after the Queen's death, it portrays Camilla as a nymphomaniac.

Photographic artist Alison Jackson has created a cheeky picture of Camilla and Prince Philip having a grope on the balcony at Buckingham Palace.

Prince Harry is depicted as a brilliant schemer intent on becoming King, helped by his glamorous blonde girlfriend Anoushka - who bears more than a passing resemblance to Harry's real-life love Chelsy Davy.

The production will begin a six-week run at the King's Head Theatre in Islington, north London, on July 20. The writers are the Spectator's drama critics Toby Young and Lloyd Evans.

"I'm sure we'll get a bit of flack but it's not intended to be an anti-Royal play. Our only agenda is to make people laugh," said Young. Evans added: "It may sound controversial, but in terms of subject matter A Right Royal Farce couldn't be more conventional. The Royals have been a staple of British satire from Swift to Spitting Image."

Camilla is played by actress Sara Crowe, best known for starring in the Philadelphia TV adverts and the film Four Weddings And A Funeral.

The play is directed by Alan Cohen, a veteran of the National Theatre. "The script is in the classic tradition of farce stretching all the way back to the Greeks," Cohen said. "It holds the great and the good up to gentle ridicule and shows us a side of them we don't normally see."
