Rebels at The Albany: 10 shows to see at the politics and protest festival

Feeling a little rebellious? Then head over to the Albany in Deptford for an arts festival on politics and protest.

The Rebels season, which runs from April 11-June 1, features more than 30 different shows covering theatre, spoken word, cabaret, performance arts and music.

From history's most badass women to a self help guide for Corbynites, here’s our pick of the shows you should see at the Albany’s Rebels season.

The Kids are Alright

After a trip to the museum turns to tragedy, a family is left bereft. Two performances take place at the same time, as the show intertwines an adult narrative of parental grief with the hopefulness of children. The experimental piece mixes theatre, dance and an immersive audio experience to look at how adults and children care for one another.

April 11-13, the Albany

WOW EVERYTHING IS AMAZING

Sounds Like Chaos theatre company present a world 50 years in the future, where the line between human and technology has blurred. At the New Church, sermons are stored on servers and deities have been replaced by data. WOW EVERYTHING IS AMAZING asks what this means for us as a species.

April 16-18, the Albany

Whose Eyes Are These Anyway?

A video of Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan’s performance in a poetry slam has been viewed more than two million times. Her new monologue asks why one Muslim woman would want to perform on stage when she’s already a spectacle in society.

April 20, the Albany

Women Who Gave No F***s

Competitive feminist storytelling – that’s a sport worth watching. Story Jam’s “myth off” sees two teams of stand-ups battle it out to crown their own woman from history the most supreme legend. It’s bound to be an inspirational night of tales that will make you want to tear up the rule book.

April 30, Canada Water Theatre

Question Time Cabaret

Politics enters the world of cabaret to prove that it’s not just for old grey men in suits. Poet and theatre-maker Talia Randall hosts this show about the state of the nation, with provocative performances from “punk trash” drag king Chiyo Gomes, performance artist Lasana Shabazz and poet Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan.

May 2, the Albany

Drawing the Line

A line drawn down the centre of the room splits the audience into two rival nations. The fully interactive show lets you watch or create the story by building cities, fighting on the battlefield or watching from the sidelines. Only one nation will survive to the end.

May 9-25, Deptford Lounge

A Self Help Guide to Being In Love with Jeremy Corbyn

Jess Green joined the Labour Party in 2007 and stuck with it through Blair, Brown and Milliband until she fell head over heels and became a true Corbynite. Her lyrical show frets about how the party could win another election when it's so divided within its own ranks.

May 9, Canada Water Theatre

Girl World

Inga and Tilly exist in a surreal, musical world with just two inhabitants. The only rule in Girl World is: No boys allowed. When Tilly begins to wonder what else might exist outside their little bubble, everything descends into chaos, with the two friends fighting each other for ultimate dominance.

May 15-16, the Albany

Fatty Fat Fat

Ever felt like your body takes up more space than society wants it to? Fatty Fat Fat is Katie Greenall’s solo show about what it’s like when everyone wants to tell you what to do with your body. It’s time to take up some space.

The Parakeet Experience

Taken from her new show Parakeet, sparkly fashion, musical storytelling and exotic birds meet in Brigitte Aphrodite’s poetic attempt to find a new genre of punk – punk with empathy.
