Alan Bennett’s Habeas Corpus will be revived in the Menier Chocolate Factory’s upcoming spring season.

The production, opening in May, will be directed by Patrick Marber, who is next directing Tom Stoppard’s new play Leopoldstadt in the West End, and follows the farcical sexual escapades of the residents of the Wicksteeds' house.

Also announced today, Paula Vogel’s Indecent, which charts the controversies around Sholem Asch’s play God of Vengeance, will open in March.

God of Vengeance was set in a brothel and contained the first ever lesbian kiss on an American stage. The English translation Asch’s 1907 play was first staged in New York in 1923, but was brought to a close when the entire cast, producer and owner of the theatre were indicted for obscenity. Indecent tells this story.

The Menier production will be directed by Rebecca Taichman, who co-created the production with writer Vogel and steered it towards a Tony win in 2017. The show, also nominated for best play at the awards, was a huge hit with audiences and extended its run on Broadway.

Booking for this play will open on January 27, with Habeas Corpus tickets available from March.
