Jenna Russell will star in a musical version of Alison Bechdel’s classic graphic novel, Fun Home.

The production will open at the Young Vic in June after a hit run on Broadway in 2015, where it picked up five Tony awards. It is directed by Sam Gold and written by Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron.

Russell, a celebrated star of musical theatre, was last on stage alongside Kit Harington in Jamie Lloyd’s production of Doctor Faustus. She will play Helen, Bechdel’s mother.

Kaisa Hammarlund and Eleanor Kane will both play Bechdel herself at different stages of her life, and Cherrelle Skeete, a member of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s original cast, will play Bechdel’s first girlfriend Joan.

Bechdel’s book was published in 2006 and has since gone on to become one of the most famous contemporary graphic novels in the world. It tells the story of Bechel growing up in a funeral home run by her father, as well as her coming of age and awareness of her sexuality.

Fun Home runs from June 18 - September 1 at the Young Vic.
