Cabaret returns to West End

Denise van Outen: linked with the Cabaret role
10 April 2012

The musical Cabaret is to return to the West End for the first time in 13 years

The new production at London's Lyric Theatre will be directed by Rufus Norris.

No decision has been taken on who will star as nightclub singer Sally Bowles but Denise Van Outen has been linked to the role.

The Kander and Ebb musical set in 1930s Berlin was last seen in London in Sam Mendes' acclaimed 1993 revival at the Donmar Warehouse, which starred Jane Horrocks.

The production went on to Broadway where it earned Natasha Richardson a Tony Award.

Dame Judi Dench also starred in a West End production in 1968.

But it is Liza Minnelli who is most associated with the role of Sally Bowles.

The Hollywood actress won an Oscar for her star turn in the 1972 movie version.

This latest production opens at the Lyric Theatre on October 10.

It will join a slate of new West End musicals including Evita, The Sound of Music, Dirty Dancing and Spamalot.

Rufus Norris directed the award-winning Festen in the West End and his production of Market Boy opened last week at the National Theatre.
