British Museum buys Standard's Munch-inspired 'Scream' cartoon ahead of new exhibition

Topical: The Standard's cartoon

An Evening Standard cartoon by Christian Adams has been bought by the British Museum for its collection.

The vision of Theresa May in the image of Edvard Munch’s The Scream ran in the paper on March 21, the day after a lithograph version of the work was unveiled at the museum ahead of a major exhibition.

Hugo Chapman, Keeper of Prints and Drawings, said the cartoon includes red walls visible in press photos that day, “so it seemed like something we should have”.

The upcoming Edvard Munch exhibition at the London museum will explore on the artist's ability to capture raw emotion in a single work, including anxiety, love, despair and isolation.

It will also include a black and white version of the iconic The Scream painting — one of the most famous artworks in history.

The show will specifically focus on Munch's printmaking, which brought about his fame in the late 19th century.

The Munch Museum in Norway has loaned the British Museum more than 50 prints for the exhibition — one of the biggest international loans of Munch's prints they have ever given. In total the show will feature around 83 pieces by the Norwegian artist.

Munch created four main versions of The Scream, two pastels and two paintings, but a number of other lithographs and sketches are also associated with it.

Edvard Munch: Love And Angst opens at British Museum on Thursday April 11 and runs to July 21, britishmuseum.org
