A girl aged 10 is fighting plans to remove a “beautiful” sculpture from a north London shopping centre as part of an £11 million revamp.

The owner of Angel Central in Islington wants to relocate the towering Angel Wings sculpture to make way for a raised walkway.

The 15m stainless steel angel sculpture was designed in 2003 by artists Wolfgang Buttress and Fiona Heron as the centre’s focal point.

Owner CBRE Ltd first submitted its proposals last September. They did not include plans to relocate Angel Wings in the borough.

But Olivia Gordon Clark, who lives nearby and thinks the sculpture is “beautiful”, started a campaign calling on Islington Council to refuse the application.

The council was sent two petitions totalling 936 signatures, and 138 emails. A decision is due to be made this evening.

Olivia told the Standard: “How could you have Angel Central without the wings? I’ve really tried to show the council that people love the wings and how important they are. My grandpa described removing the wings as ‘cultural vandalism’ and I think that’s the best phrase.”

Angel Central said it had always wanted to “rehome” the sculpture elsewhere in Islington.
