Paul McCartney has been confirmed as the first headliner for next year's Glastonbury.

The former Beatles bassist will top the bill on the Pyramid stage on the Saturday night of the festival next summer.

It will be his first time at Worthy Farm since 2004, when he also headlined, performing a huge 33-song set.

McCartney, 77, who will become the festival's oldest ever headliner in 2020, joins Diana Ross as the only other act confirmed to appear next summer.

It comes after McCartney tweeted a picture of Philip Glass, Emma Stone and Chuck Berry on Monday morning — with many soon realising that by taking segments from each name, the word “glas-ston-berry” could be spelled out.

Tweeting after the announcement, Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis wrote: "Having Paul McCartney coming back to headline the Pyramid next year is an absolute dream come true. There really was no one that we wanted more for the 50th anniversary at Glastonbury festival."

As ever, many acts have been linked with the coveted top spot on the bill, with Taylor Swift, The 1975 and Elton John among those apparently in line for the other slots.

Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac were among the early favourites, but both acts have since ruled themselves out.
