Neko Case, kd lang, Laura Veirs - case/lang/veirs, review: ‘they all get to shine’

The trio team up on a glorious collaboration that plays to all their strengths
A touch of class: Neko Case, kd lang, and Laura Veirs complement each other perfectly on collaborative effort

The duets album is often a cynical exercise that feels like the music industry equivalent of an arranged marriage. So how about a threesome?

case/lang/veirs

A mutual admiration between Neko Case, kd lang and Laura Veirs has resulted in a glorious collaborative record that plays to each of their strengths. Case is a sublime songwriter who specialises in country-tinged, heartbreaking choruses, while Veirs brings her indie-folk charm and lang’s smoky voice lends this project a touch of class.

Perhaps the trio are overly polite in sharing out lead vocals – there’s no battle of egos in this supergroup – but at least they all get to shine.

1,000 Miles Away is lang at her most languorous; Best Kept Secret is a jangly delight from Veirs; and Case is simply majestic on Down, Supermoon and Atomic Number. Gorgeous harmonies, too.
