Mercury Prize nominees 2020: Dua Lipa and Charli XCX lead the way as women-dominated shortlist revealed

A record number of female artists have been nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize.

Eight out of the 12 nominees are either women, bands fronted by women or bands with a female member.

Seven of the acts up for the 2020 Hyundai Mercury Prize Album of the Year are from London, including Dua Lipa, who has received a nod for Future Nostalgia.

Charli XCX has been nominated for How I’m Feeling Now. Scottish composer Anna Meredith has made the list with FIBS, while singer and drummer Georgia is nominated for Seeking Thrills and folk singer Laura Marling for Song For Our Daughter.

Lanterns on the Lake, fronted by Hazel Wilde, have been nominated for Spook The Herd, with Porridge Radio, whose singer and guitarist is Dana Margolin, on the list for Every Bad.

Band Sports Team, who have a female drummer Al Greenwood, have been nominated for Deep Down Happy.

The list is completed by Kano, Stormzy, Michael Kiwanuka and Moses Boyd. The shortlist was revealed today and the winner will be announced on September 24.

The Mercury Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the music industry, and this year covers albums released between July 20 2019 and July 17 2020. The winner will receive a £25,000 cash prize.

The judging panel is made up of musicians, industry figures and journalists, and this year included the likes of Anna Calvi, Jorja Smith and Jamie Cullum.
