Singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti revealed his songs are love letters to his wife – and notes to say ‘thank you for putting up with me.’

Speaking exclusively to the Standard, the When We Were Lovers singer said: “A lot of the songs are sort of apologies…a thank you for standing by me.

“When my first daughter was born, I was lousy. A really good dad but a lousy husband. I wasn’t ready for it. There’s a song I sing - I had no master plan/I had no grand designs/I got a little out of hand/I got a little out of line” – I mean, that says it all.

“I was 25, married, and when my daughter was born I had £400 in my bank account. I had a legal battle going on, I had an industry that wanted nothing to do with me… It was all a bit grim. When my wife got pregnant and had a child, it was amazing to see a girl become a woman and I had definitely not become a man. I was still a boy.”

Savoretti, whose album Sleep No More is released today, also explained that much of his inspiration stemmed from his parents’ split. “It was consoling to my mother, we would sit in the kitchen and I’d play every night, and she would sit there with her glass of wine and we would cry. It was kind of a ritual.”
