Anne Marie: Therapy helped me face my demons during lockdown

The singer, 30, known for hits including Ciao Adios and 2002, said she decided to use lockdown to “make the most of the situation” and work on herself.

Anne-Marie says she faced her demons and learned to “love herself” thanks to having therapy during a “horrific” 2020.

The singer, 30, known for hits including Ciao Adios and 2002, said she decided to use lockdown to “make the most of the situation” and work on herself.

Anne-Marie said she had faced her anxiety and fear of judgement, suggesting taking a year out of the limelight was “needed.”

Speaking to the Standard, Anne-Marie - who is originally from East Tilbury in Essex - said: “2020 was a big life lesson for me. It was horrific, and it was a bad year and so many people have been through tough times. But I tried to make the most of the situation that we were dealt with.

“This year has been one of my favourite years so far in my career and as a human. I started therapy during lockdown and it really helped me figure things out. And start to like myself. It sounds so sad. I have had anxiety for so long and worried about judgement and wondering if people like me. It is a big thing and when you love yourself, everything changes, and everything is better.”

The star - who has named her upcoming album Therapy - continued: “I got so low, and sad really, that there was only one way to get out of that and that was to face everything head on. Thanks to that year, I can live a life that is much happier. It is a weird juxtaposition really. It was one of the worst years in the world, but for me, maybe, it was needed.”

The star, who appeared as a judge on the latest season of The Voice alongside WIll.i.am, Olly Murs and Sir Tom Jones, said her newfound confidence meant she would love to do more television work.

Anne-Marie - who has also appeared on Celebrity Great British Bake Off and Gogglebox - said: “When I did the Bake Off, I loved it so much, And with the Voice I really liked that people could see me with my personality and not just my voice. They could see me as a person. So it was a great thing for me to do.”
