What is Pokémon Day? Inside the celebration of the beloved video game series

Catching ’em all since 1996

It is on its way – the annual celebration of one of the world’s favourite cartoons. On February 27, it will be that time again – Pokémon Day – which celebrates the release of the original versions of the game – Red and Green – when they first came out in Japan in 1996.

Not to be confused with the UK release of the games, which were slightly updated in Pokémon Red and Blue, which came to the West in 1998.

Initially created by Satoshi Tajiri, from gorgeous animated TV shows and films to the immensely addictive games, Pokémon shows no signs of slowing down.

What is Pokémon Day?

On February 27, 1996, the first Pokémon video games, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green launched in Japan, kicking off a phenomenon that would grow to be one of the most popular and influential entertainment brands in the world

The release of the games for the Nintendo Gameboy in the 1990s spawned an animated TV series in 1997 and a collectable trading card game in 1999, both of which remain monstrously successful to this day.

How is Pokémon Day being celebrated?

Past Pokémon Day announcements have included everything from the reveal of new titles to special promotional events and merchandise.

At present, no details have been given of a Pokémon Presents or Pokémon Direct digital broadcast on the day. However, considering the usual content of past Pokémon Days, one is almost certain to be part of the day’s proceedings and will most likely be announced closer to the time on the Pokémon YouTube channel.
