Woolmer affair goes Bollywood

Woolmer: his mysterious death will be fictionalised in a new Bollywood movie
Sarah Hills|Metro10 April 2012

A film about the mysterious death of cricket coach Bob Woolmer is being made by a leading Bollywood director.

The musical, called Jannat, which means Paradise, is a love story set against a cricketing background.

It will be shot by Indian film-maker Mahesh Bhatt, who is best known for his sensitive human dramas.

'I'm definitely making the film on the entire Woolmer episode, though we will not name him anywhere in the story,' Mr Bhatt said. 'We are using a fictional situation but the people will see the obvious connection. The film is not just about the coach's death.

'It is a love story against the backdrop of cricket. There is betting, there is match-fixing. And, because it is a love story, there have to be songs, too.' Filming should start in August, five months after Mr Woolmer, 58, was found dead in his hotel room in Jamaica.

Police said the former England opener was strangled but doubts remain about the cause of death, which came a day after his Pakistan team was knocked out of the World Cup by Ireland.
