US box office takings hit zero for the first time in history as coronavirus crisis takes hold

Historic low: Disney were among the studios who declined to disclose figures

In these unprecedented times, truly astonishing things are happening in the movie industry – we’ve had film delays, red carpet event postponements and cinema closures all over the world, meaning the future of the industry looks more uncertain than ever.

Now, the inevitable has happened – for the first time in history, the takings at the US box office is officially $0.

Data agency Comscore declined to release its weekly report into box office performances, with studios like Disney deciding against releasing figures.

While the number officially ranks as zero as figures weren't formally submitted, reports suggest that there are still films taking nominal sums in the US.

According to Box Office Mojo, comedy Phoenix, Oregon has taken more than $3,000 as the result of a streaming partnership with select cinemas.

Deadline also reports that Pixar’s Onward has grossed more than £70,000 and The Invisible Man has taken $64,000. The figures are thought to be the result of screenings hosted at drive-in cinemas across the US.
