A new Spider-Man movie is swinging into cinemas, with Spider-Man: Far From Home set to become the latest superhero smash this summer.

Peter Parker and friends are hitting the road in the new film, taking viewers away from the streets of New York to the piazzas of Europe.

It’s set to be the biggest superhero movie of the year alongside Avengers: End Game, which is released in April.

Here’s everything you need to know about Spidey's latest adventure.

What is the Spider-Man: Far From Home plot?

The movie is due to take place shortly after the events of Avengers: End Game, and follows Peter Parker as he heads on a school trip with friends, looking to escape the pressures of superhero duty for a while.

However, it’s only a matter of time before the trip is interrupted by Nick Fury, who signs him up for an important mission in Europe.

Parker is tasked with fighting back against the Elemental creatures, including the villainous Hydro-Man, who we catch a glimpse of in the trailer.

Interestingly, Mysterio, a traditional villain in the Marvel universe, could be about to switch allegiances as he’s seen in the trailer tackling Hydro Man and warning Spidey: “You don’t want any part of this.”

Mysterio star Jake Gyllenhaal recently spoke about the film, saying: "There are these threats to the world, the Elemental creatures, and Mysterio is someone who knows about them and who wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he's the only one who really understands them in a way.

"He teams up with the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man and unfortunately he has to make him become more than just a Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man."

Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer

The film’s first teaser trailer takes viewers from one European location to another, with Parker and his pals taking in the scenery at the Grand Canal in Venice and beside London bridge.

It also gives a clear indication of the film’s tone. Fans can expect a little flirting between Peter and Zendaya's MJ, as well as between Happy Hogan and Aunt May, and the whole thing looks a little breezier than your typical Marvel blockbuster. It certainly appears to be something of an upbeat reaction to the upcoming Avengers: End Game, which is expected to be much darker.

The biggest moment in the trailer, however, is the unveiling of new villain Mysterio, played by Gyllenhaal, who becomes the latest star to join the Marvel cinematic universe.

Who is in the Spider-Man: Far From Home cast

Tom Holland is back as Parker, with Zendaya also returning as his school friend and possible love interest MJ. Jacob Batalon is back as Ned, Marisa Tomei is back as Aunt May, while Jon Favreau also returns as Happy Hogan.

As mentioned, Gyllenhaal is the film’s biggest new arrival as Mysterio. However, there’s intriguing casting news in the form of Turkish-born actor Numan Acar. Sony are keeping details close to their chest, although it’s been revealed that the actor has been cast in the role of Dimitri. As fans of the Spider-Man comics will remember, Dmitri Smerdyakov is the real name of supervillain Chameleon – could we see the reveal of one of Parker’s formative foes in the new film?

Holland, still only 22, first rose to prominence after playing the title role in Billy Elliot the Musical on the West End back in 2008, which eventually led to roles in The Impossible in 2012 and the 2015 BBC series Wolf Hall.

Holland’s lovably high-energy take on Spider-Man saw him quickly win over fans after making his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Far From Home looks set to be the second part of trilogy of Spider-Man films starring Holland, although fans could expect to see the actor in the role for years to come.
