Of the latest films in the ICA’s promotional season of New British Cinema, The Blue Tower, made by Smita Bhide, is much the better.

It has Abhin Galeya as a young man trapped in an unhappy marriage who falls for the nurse looking after his bedridden and overbearing aunt.

As things get more desperate, they conceive a plan to rob the old lady and disappear.

It goes badly wrong and the looming menace of the Blue Tower dominating their street seems to be taking revenge.

Bhide secures decent playing from her cast but the denouement seems unlikely and the metaphor of the tower doesn’t really work.

Dummy is a coming-of-age drama from Matthew Thompson about two young brothers left to fend for themselves after their mother dies.

The older boy take to drink and drugs, the younger goes to bed with a lifesize mannequin in his mother’s clothes.

The film is well played by Aaron Johnson and Thomas Grant but often unconvincing and ham-fisted.
