Awards season is upon us. While music fans were sure to enjoy the Grammys in early February, film fans will be looking forward to the most important night in the international film industry: the Oscars.

This year, a crisis team will be in place following the unprecedented events of last year’s ceremony, which included Will Smith slapping Chris Rock on stage. As a result, the King Richard actor has been banned from the Academy Awards for 10 years.

To prevent any “potential surprises” this year, academy chief executive Bill Kramer has introduced a crisis team, saying “it is our hope that we will be prepared for anything that we may not anticipate right now but that we’re planning for just in case it does happen.”

He also said that host Jimmy Kimmel “can really pivot and manage those moments” because he’s “used to dealing with live TV”.

Kimmel himself has said that he will “beat the s**t” out of anyone who tries to recreate Smith’s slap. “If somebody comes up on the stage and slaps me?,” he said. “Well, I size them up, and, if I’m bigger than they are, I beat the s*** out of them on television.”

Rock has since addressed the slap in his Selective Outrage show. “You know what people say, they say, ‘Words hurt,’" Rock said. "Anybody that say words hurt has never been punched in the face.”

The nominations for the Academy Awards were announced in late January, with films like The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once receiving numerous nods.

Paul Mescal received his first nomination for Aftersun, while Austin Butler was nominated for the first time for his portrayal of Elvis.

With just weeks to go to the ceremony, find out below when and where to watch.
