LOTR favourite in Oscars race

10 April 2012

The Lord of the Rings is the second hottest favourite ever for the best film award, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes.

It is 1/3 to win, followed by Mystic River at 3/1 and Lost in Translation at 5/1.

Peter Jackson is favourite to win best director, Charlize Theron to win best actress, and Bill Murray and Sean Penn are joint favourites for best actor.

"The Return of the King is such a strong favourite for best picture that we considered not betting on the category at all," said Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush.
"It will take something dramatic to stop it scooping best picture. The film is the second hottest favourite for the award ever, behind Titanic.

"Bookmakers believe it will be a case of third time lucky for Peter Jackson, who is odds-on favourite to pick up best director.

"Bill Murray is long overdue a big honour and will scrap it out with Sean Penn for best actor. We think this will be the closest fought of the categories.

"Charlize Theron, much like Halle Berry a couple of years ago, surprised cinemagoers with a fantastic performance in Monster and is favourite for best actress."
