Inspired look at world's greatest films

A season devoted to the greatest films made - from Psycho to His Girl Friday - is being screened at one of the capital's greatest cinemas.

Out Of The Shadows: 50 Cinematic Masterpieces is the final season of movies that will be shown at the National Film Theatre on the South Bank.

Next month, the complex will be relaunched as the BFI Southbank, with a new gallery and exhibition and education spaces.

The cinematic masterpieces have been selected by the British Film Institute's head of film programming, Geoff Andrew.

A spokeswoman for the BFI said: "This list is about films that mattered and matter still: great, important, innovative films that have influenced and inspired. We will present titles that have often been overlooked in recent polls.

"It is a different approach to film, and appreciating film as a concept and an art and all that it represents in a more historical context."

The BFI Southbank launches on 14 March. As well as the three existing screens, the space adjacent to the cinema has been transformed.

Among the new attractions are a gallery that will showcase leading contemporary artists' work in film, video and new media.

The debut exhibition is Tiny, Funny, Big And Sad from New York-based artists Jennifer and Kevin McCoy.

The new foyer space at Theatre Avenue will house a drop-in digital cinema and host talks, presentations and education events.

In June, the South Bank's four resident orchestras, with more than 250 musicians, will play together for the first time in the re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall.
