With Bond-like sequences of CGI, Jon M Chu's spectacular sequel is all action but little drama

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the 2009 precursor to this limply told if spectacular sequel, made more than $300 million worldwide. But if this does equally well, it would be a considerable surprise.

The team of indestructible Special Forces, including Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki), face not only the nasty Cobra but Jonathan Pryce’s wicked crook who is trying to dominate the world after seizing the president of the US and, by some miracle of science, making himself look exactly the same as him. The imposter gathers together all those who command countries with nuclear weapons, explodes a huge bomb in London and watches Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament disappear in a blur of dust and smoke.

The film, largely incomprehensible in its plotting and full of subsidiary characters only those familiar with the first film will recognise, is directed by Jon M Chu. He seems to think that Bond-like sequences of CGI, madcap fights and stunts are more important than a decent screenplay.
