Funny Face - film review

A restoration of Stanley Donen's 1957 ambitious musical, starring Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire
28 February 2014

Another chance to see Stanley Donen's 1957 ambitious musical. Audrey Hepburn is Jo, a chaste, intellectual gamine who – thanks to debonair magazine photographer, Dick (58 year old Fred Astaire) – flies to Paris and discovers fashion and passion. The fashion's great (everyone weras splendid coats). The passion's a problem (there's no chemistry between Dick and Jo).

Still, if you're prepared to do a bit of revisionist thinking, it all makes sense. Just imagine that Dick is a closeted gay... He's enjoys flirting with his muse and collaborator; she's tickled by his talent and wit. Hey presto: the happy ending becomes a happy beginning; they're both ready for love, just not with each other.
