Five must-watch films arriving in June

While the sun might be shining outside, there are plenty of real joys to be found inside a cinema this month.

A series of huge franchise favourites and indie darlings are arrive this month. This year is fast becoming a huge year for Disney, with Pixar’s Toy Story 4 sure to prove one of the biggest releases of the summer; 2019 is definitely the year of the blockbusting blockbuster. The latest Toy Story is out in UK cinemas toward the end of the month, with Woody, Buzz and the gang venturing outside the toy box for one final adventure.

Before that, a documentary focusing on one of the UK’s most legendary, outspoken frontman arrives in cinemas, as well as the return of huge sci-fi and superhero franchises.

Prepare for too much popcorn; these are our picks of what's on this month.

Liam Gallagher: As It Was (June 7)

The story of Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is being told on the big screen this month, with documentary As It Was set to paint an intimate picture of one of music’s most indelible characters. The film sees the singer rediscover his love of making music after splitting from Oasis in 2009, before releasing a number one album and performing at One Love Manchester. It sets out the capture the man behind the bravado, and is sure to be a must-watch for music fans.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (June 7)

It's already been a huge year for Sophie Turner, as Game of Thrones came to an end, and she tied the knot with Joe Jonas. Now Turner takes centre stage again in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. As Jean Grey, the film follows her becoming one of the world’s most powerful mutants, Dark Phoenix, after being hit with a transformative cosmic force. X-Men regulars Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are also along for the ride, in a film that looks to breath some much needed life into the DC cinematic universe.

Late Night (June 7)

Late Night follows the fading powers of chat-show host legend Katherine Newbury, played by the brilliant Emma Thompson. After fearing she’s about to lose her long-running show, Newbury turns to new staff writer Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling) to liven things up and attempt to keep herself on the air. Expect plenty of laughs along the way. The film comes from Transparent director Nisha Ganatra, while Kaling also wrote the screenplay.

Men In Black: International (June 14)

Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth are tasked with saving the world in International – the first Men In Black film since 2012. Together, they must fight back against the evil Hive – an army of shape-shifting aliens – who are threatening to take down the MIB from the inside. The film, directed by Straight Outta Compton’s F Gary Gray, also marks the second new film of the month for Emma Thompson, who stars as Agent O.

Toy Story 4 (June 21)

Woody and Buzz are blasting off to infinity and beyond for the very last time this month, with Toy Story 4 arriving in cinemas. The new film is all about Woody, as he journeys into the outside world in order to try and save Forky, a new toy created by owner Bonny. There, he reunites with old friend Bo Peep, and is confronted with a dilemma – stay and experience the world outside the toy box, or return and be with his friends. The last film in the franchise left many viewers an emotional wreck, and we expect this one to bring all the feels too.
