Downton Abbey is fast becoming one of the biggest British films of the year, and now fans could be in for a sequel.

The team behind the series and the movie have revealed they are open to making a follow-up, and even have ideas for a second film ready to go.

Despite not being the biggest hit among critics, Downton has made the step up to the big screen remarkably well, taking £5.1m in UK during its opening weekend and £9.8m worldwide.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the film’s co-producer Gareth Neame said: “If it does really well, then we’d do another one.

"We’ve got the beginnings of ideas of what we might do next — if that would happen."

The Downton film, which follows the Crawley family as they prepare for the visit of the King and Queen, comes four years after show’s sixth and final series came to an end on ITV.

Stars of the film are also keen for another big screen adaptation, with Allen Leech (Tom Brandon) looking forward to seeing what creator and screenwriter Julian Fellowes does next.

"It would be very interesting to see what would happen. I think we would all be up for it," he said. "It all comes down to how this one does. If people really love it and there really is an appetite, then why wouldn’t we do it?"

Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley, also revealed that she wanted to make another film. "We love making the show so I hope people enjoy it. It would be really cool to make another,” she said.
