Movie fans will be introduced to classical music “without realising” at the Royal Albert Hall’s first film festival.

The venue is teaming up with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra to give classics such as Jurassic Park and Aliens a live orchestral soundtrack.

The festival also includes a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller The Man Who Knew Too Much, which was partly filmed on location at the hall in South Kensington.

The Albert Hall’s head of events, Lucy Noble, said the orchestra took the cinema experience into another dimension. She added: “For us the interesting thing is it is introducing people to classical music and orchestras without them realising, they come for the title of the film and for many of those people they have never seen an orchestra before. They are having an introduction to classical music in a relaxed, informal way while watching a film.

“When the film finishes you then have the credits which can run for up to five minutes but we make sure the houselights stay down and people stay in their seats and sit there and listen to the orchestra and they thoroughly enjoy it”.

The festival, which runs from October 27 to November 6, also includes a Halloween screening of the horror classic Nosferatu and is likely to become an annual event. Ms Noble said: “It has taken off amazingly and I think people find it interesting because we are doing quite different events, like a silent disco in the loading bay, so it’s not your typical film festival. We are also bringing music to the centre stage”.

The Albert Hall has appeared in more than 40 films since it opened its doors in 1871, including Love Story and The Ipcress File.
