Himizu

When the tsunami and earthquake hit Japan in March 2011, Japanese director Sono Sion was working on an adaptation of a manga serial about troubled youth. He immediately made the ravaged urban landscape the setting for his film and a few months later it was premiered at the Venice Festival. The protagonist is 15-year-old Sumida, abandoned by his parents and chased by yakuza for his alcoholic father’s many debts. Blackly comic in parts and often seriously violent, Himizu doesn’t match Sono’s Love Exposure but is still an original take on its tough subject.

Top Cat - The Movie 3D

Cert U, 90 mins

Alberto Mar’s Mexican animated film is based on the popular Hanna-Barbera cartoons about the anarchic Top Cat and his friends. This time around, they face a new police chief who is on to most of their tricks but they somehow manage to defeat him. The animation, and the 3D, is pretty basic but the story swings along reasonably well and English-speaking actors dub the characters decently.

On The Sly

Cert 12A, 77 mins

Belgian director Olivier Ringer’s six-year-old daughter is very much the star of this attractively made story of a small girl who, reluctantly, gets taken from Paris to her parents’ country house for weekends and, thinking she is being neglected, runs away deep into the wooded countryside. Wynona Ringer is exceptional in the lead, commentating on her adventures in what is for her a strange and fascinating world. An excellent children’s film full of a fresh charm that’s all too rare.
