Sometimes club gigs toss you a curveball. Last night’s first act, Suzi Ruffell, was taken ill just before going onstage. Newer comics Alex Smith and Mark Silcox gamely plugged the gap while supersub Lloyd Griffith biked over from Battersea.

This chunky Jack Black lookalike explained that he had been sitting in his pants watching the football 20 minutes earlier but was match-fit enough to deliver some punchy gags about growing up in Grimsby. He also revealed a jawdropping singing voice. Expect to hear more from Griffith.

Headliner Nathan Caton was well-prepared and it showed. The youthful London comic breezed through his set, which majored on crowdpleasing chat, often about his West Indian background. He mocked his stepdad, who is so pedantic that he measures the sandwiches in Subway, and confessed that he is so competitive he cannot resist out-insulting 11-year-olds and making them cry.

Caton was most interesting whenever he touched on the topic of race. He has just been heard in his own semi-autobiographical Radio 4 series, Can’t Tell Nathan Caton Nothing, and wryly noted that his is not your typical Radio 4 voice: “It’s like 50 Cent making a guest appearance on Midsomer Murders.”
