Rarely-seen treasures from the Government’s art collection have gone on show across east London.

Works which usually adorn the walls of Whitehall offices and embassies will be seen in shopping centres, schools and leisure centres in Waltham Forest.

The pieces include Sir Jacob Epstein’s 1933 painting of Epping Forest, which will hang at The View visitor centre in Chingford, and Jane and Louise Wilson’s Safe Light, Reflected Ballroom.

The exhibition of 68 works is part of a year-long programme in Waltham Forest — London’s first Borough of Culture.

The show called Ways of Seeing, features work from 33 internationally-known British-based artists and is running for four months, from April 24 - August 31.

All of the art in the show responds to ideas around production, landscape and nature, all relating to the Borough's rich history.

The first two weeks of the show will also see Mel Brimfield’s 4' 33" (Prepared Pianola for Roger Bannister) pop-up at The Mall in Walthamstow Central. Further ahead in June, works by Cornelia Parker and Rachel Whiteread will open at the Vestry House Museum.

Speaking about the project, Arts Minister Michael Ellis said: “The Government Art Collection promotes the best of Britain to the world.

"The work on display in Waltham Forest has been chosen to reflect the diversity and creativity of the area. I am delighted that we can share these important cultural assets as we mark the first London Borough of Culture.”

Waltham Forest's year-long mayor arts programme is also set to feature public gigs, workshops, artworks and performances.
