Pubs are facing higher bills from April onwards, when the current energy-support scheme comes to an end and is replaced by a less generous package, which was announced by Jeremy Hunt yesterday.

The boss of a leading brewery described the Chancellor’s announcement as “fairly disappointing”.

Charlene Lyons, chief executive of Black Sheep Brewery, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “If we were to push all of the price increase over to the consumer, across the board, whether it be energy and everything else, input costs of raw materials… you’d be talking about over £10 a pint, which is clearly not sustainable.”

In the past year, London has already seen the arrival of the £8 pint, with warnings that inflation could take the cost up to £14. However, if customers aren’t willing to pay it, pubs may not survive to see prices reach such heights.

Many of the responses we received on social media were disapproving of the family feud being played out in public.

lindsaymanary said on Instagram: “Is there even anything left that he hasn’t talked about?! Half of the stuff is TMI”.

On Facebook, Liz Satterley picked out the most surprising thing: “That he thinks there’s a way back into the fold…”

Meanwhile, Brenda Franke identified the real victim in William and Harry’s alleged altercation: “The poor dog’s bowl was broken.”
