Travelodge plans to open 17 new hotels across the UK, as operators prepare for lockdowns to ease and demand to pick up.
The budget hotels group said the sites are being developed by third party investors. The firm will lease the properties, and some 360 new jobs will be created.
It is expected that most of the new hotels will be open and trading in time for the summer season.
Of the new venues, three are in London, in Manor House, Elephant & Castle and Peckham. Some of the sites will be ‘Travelodge Plus’, which is a brand aimed at attracting business customers, and offers plenty of USB power points and booths for meetings.
Craig Bonnar, Travelodge chief executive said: “After a challenging 12 months, today’s announcement demonstrates the strength in the Travelodge brand and is a key step forward as we emerge out of lockdown.”
The update comes after a tumultuous period for the hotel sector, with travel restrictions hammering demand.
Last year Travelodge had tensions with landlords during the pandemic as it sought to reduce rents, In June 2020 creditors approved the chain’s proposed company voluntary arrangement (CVA), in a move that resulted in measures such as temporary rent reductions until the end of 2021.
The company, which is owned by GoldenTree Asset Management, Avenue Capital and Goldman Sachs, said after the latest expansion, it will have 597 hotels in the UK, Ireland and Spain.
