Finnish firm sheds 160 UK workers

The credit crunch and high energy prices took a further toll on industrial jobs today as Finnish packaging group Huhtamaki axed 160 British jobs - almost 40% of its UK workforce.

The cuts at the firm, which supplies McDonald's with burger boxes came soon after safety-glass maker Toughglass fired 60 workers and chemicals giant Saudi Basic Industries shed 200.

British manufacturing fell in May to an eight-month low amid widespread expectations of a recession in the sector. June unemployment figures, out this week, were far worse than forecasters had predicted.
